Is it unlucky to win at mahjong with all 4 winds ponged in your hand? (triplets, or more, of all the winds)?

My elders have always played mahjong for quite a while, and they always warn me about playing this hand. If you win with this hand it gives you a lot of points. They say that it’s considered having too much good luck, meaning that you will have great amounts of bad luck in the future. Is this a real superstition amongst Chinese, or Taiwanese people? If it is, can anyone help me find any websites which state it, or just give me their opinion?

You are superstitious if you believe in luck in this sense. The tiles have no memory–they are dealt randomly, and playing an incredibly unlikely and awesome hand cannot logically affect your future chances at all.

That said, a lot of people do believe in luck like this. If nothing else, they might think that you’re being arrogant if you win like that. Perhaps it would be best to play such a hand a little modestly (and poorly) in order to show respect to the other players who do believe in luck.
